I
shot this at an Alabama paper mill. I like the image of one of McAbee's ironworkers
simply because it's got such a great backdrop for this kind of shot. McAbee
was on site to do a turnkey building project and I got into a "lift truck"
and shot some images of the workers. McAbee takes safety very seriously and
you'll note the array of safety equipment that an ironworker must wear- gloves,
safety glasses, hard hat, steel toed boots, safety harness and (in the orange
bag) breathing apparatus. One thing that I've discovered in photographing this
industry is that you'll not work with better people than construction workers.
And even though they often get a bad rap, I've always found them helpful and
courteous, which is a nice change from my photojournalism days where people
often didn't want to see you. Their work is hard and dangerous and I really
admire anyone who can do this for a living.
