Clean Water Project

McAbee Construction recently completed the construction of a $7.8 million dollar project to upgrade the water treatment system of a Birmingham, Alabama steel mill. The upgrade consisted of two large mill scale setting/oil recovery pits built of heavy reinforced concrete. Combined, the pits contained more than 5,000 yards of 4,500 psi concrete and 680 tons of 60ksi reinforced steel. Also included was the installation of over 400 lineal feet of 6'X8' reinforced concrete box flume and 760 lineal feet of 5' diameter high density polyethylene storm sewer pipe. Mechanical equipment installation included an assortment of waste oil storage tanks, pumps, baffles, skimmers and a 7.5 ton gantry crane. Also included was an assortment of electrical equipment and instrumentation for system monitoring and control.

The project was successful on many levels, completed ahead of schedule and under budget with no lost time or recordable accidents. Savings were returned to the customer.

McAbee was recognized by the Central Alabama Chapter of the American Concrete Institute with their Award of Excellence for the project.
